Baba Sang Ji: Service and Recognition

Baba Sang Ji, is a respected figure in Sikh history known for his dedication to kar seva (selfless service) and spreading the Sikh faith. While popular stories connect him to the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), the historical details are centred on his significant seva as a young man and recognition in key Sikh texts.

Involvement in the Amritsar Sarovar

As a Young Man: Baba Sang Ji participated in the kar seva to excavate the sarovar (sacred pool) at Amritsar, initiated by Guru Ram Das Ji and completed under Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

Act of Humility: His service was marked by extreme humility. He specifically chose the most menial task of washing the dirty dishes (jhoote bhaandey) in the community kitchen (langar).
Guru's Recognition: Guru Arjan Dev Ji was deeply impressed by Jodhs devotion and named him "Sang," meaning "companion" or "congregation."

Mention in Bhai Gurdas Ji's Vaaran

Historical Validation: Baba Sang Ji is mentioned by name in the esteemed writings of Bhai Gurdas Ji, a prominent Sikh scholar and the first scribe of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Specific Reference: In Vaar 11, Pauri 15, Bhai Gurdas Ji writes: "Jodh, the cook, served the Guru and swam across the world ocean."
